Did you know that "Over one-third (38%) of low-income women report missing work, school or similar events due to lack of access to period supplies"(Learn more here)? Period poverty is an issue facing many women and we want to help lower that 38%!

Join the University Scholars Executive Committee to learn more about period poverty, courtesy of CPO, and partake in the assembly of menstrual hygiene kits. These kits will be donated to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless.

Art Crawl*

The campus-wide Art Crawl begins at the Wang Center at 12pm, followed by the Zuccaire Gallery at 12:30pm. Free guided tours of diverse art galleries! Stony Brook University hosts a variety of renowned art galleries that provide unique spaces and opportunities for cultural and artistic exchanges and collaborations. Our art crawls unite our university’s galleries through a series of free guided tours led by expert curators. This initiative directly supports the university’s commitment to celebrating diversity and promotes the university’s place in the global community. Each art crawl will offer tours of five galleries, visiting each for about 30 minutes.

University Honors Programs Petting Away Life Stress (PALS) with CPO and CAPS *

This event offers students the opportunity to participate in animal assisted interactions designed to promote coping, connection, and relaxation. In addition to this, it provides the opportunity to learn about new strategies for managing stress and resources available on campus to support them. The Center for Prevention and Outreach (CPO) and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) work together to coordinate campus PALS activities in collaboration with Pet Partners.

In recent years, comics and graphic narratives have become a popular and innovative form for telling auto/biographical stories in a medium that artfully combines words and images. Lisa Diedrich's presentation will focus on one exciting sub-field of the form known as graphic medicine, which explores the conjuncture between comics and clinical medicine. You will discuss how comics and graphic narratives have become important resources for communicating a range of ethical and clinical issues related to the experience of illness, and how this hybrid verbal/visual form helps medical practitioners, patients, families, and caregivers creatively reimagine the boundaries of “health,” “illness,” “life,” and “death.”

Lisa Diedrich is professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Her research and teaching interests are in critical health studies, disability studies, feminist science studies, critical pedagogies, and graphic medicine. Her project for the Faculty Fellows program develops her interests in multi-modal approaches to pedagogy, especially the use of comics and graphic narratives as a key component to her pedagogy, both in terms of materials she teaches and activities she has students do.

A valuable research reactor at Brookhaven National Laboratory was permanently closed in the outcry that followed the announcement of a nonhazardous leak. This was only one episode in which conspiracy theories, disinformation, and political ambition have damaged scientific facilities. Robert P. Crease will talk about how such events occur, what doesn't work to resist them, and what might.

Robert P Crease is a philosopher and historian of science in the Philosophy Department. In 2021 he won the William Thomson, Lord Kelvin Medal for “describing key humanities concepts for scientists, and explaining the significance of key scientific ideas for humanists.” For 25 years has written a monthly column, “Critical Point,” for Physics World. His books include The Leak: Politics, Activism, and Loss of Trust at Brookhaven National Laboratory (with Peter Bond, MIT Press, 2022), and his edited books include Between Science and Industry: Institutions in the History of Materials Science (World Scientific 2024).

National Make a Difference Day: CPR Workshop (RSVP Required)*

This is an AHA Basic Life Support CPR training course led by certified instructors from Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Upon completion of the course, all participants will receive their American Heart Association (AHA) certification in BLS CPR. The course follows AHA guidelines, including the following topics: • High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants • The AHA Chain of Survival, specifically the BLS components • Important early use of an AED • Effective ventilations using a barrier device • Importance of teams in multi rescuer resuscitation and performance as an effective team member during multi rescuer CPR • Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants. Art in Focus: From Yiddishkeit Illuminator to Yankee Satirist: Arthur Syzk's Anti-Fascist Crusade*

How did a newly landed Polish Jewish artist transform his brush and pen into powerful anti-Nazi propaganda weapons in the years and months leading into and throughout World War II? In conjunction with the Fairfield University Art Museum’s special exhibition “Arthur Szyk: Artist and Soldier for Human Rights” (on view through December 16), we explore a reassessment of this satirical realist’s role in a wide spectrum of magazine covers and illustrations. His muscular, unsparingly barbed imagery depicted the threat of Nazi genocide unlike any other graphic artist’s cartooning. Through scathing anti-fascist satires, Szyk came to be recognized by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt as a true “soldier in art.” Philip offers an overview of this acclaimed traveling exhibition, on loan from the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art & Life at the University of California at Berkeley.

AstroFest is an exhibition of the cosmos presented by the Stony Brook Astronomy Club. The purpose of this event is to educate the campus community, and general public, about the wonders of astronomy and space exploration. Typical attractions include: observing stars and planets through the 14" telescope in the University Observatory, solar observing through a specialized solar telescope, a campus-scale model of the Solar System, visual and interactive demonstrations of a variety of astrophysical concepts, and speakers who have worked in the fields of astronomy, physics, geology, or space exploration.

Stony Brook Young Investigators Review, as well as the Alan Alda Center, will be hosting a lecture by Dr. Alan Hanash, a physician-scientist from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In his lecture, he will be speaking on recent research regarding immunologic responses to stem cell transplantation that ultimately lead to intestinal epithelial regeneration. One disease in particular, known as graft-versus host disease (GVHD), has the potential to wreak havoc on this process and ultimately, epithelial recovery.

Mental Health Comedy Tour*

This entertaining standup comedy show is designed to increase awareness about mental health and suicide, and fight the stigma linked to mental illness. Neuroengineering and AI: Opportunities and Challenges in a Future Blurring the Lines Between Mind and Machine

The Alan Alda Center & Young Investigators Review are hosting this lecture by Dr. Christopher J. Rozell. Dr. Rozell will be speaking on recent research building intelligent technologies that interface with neural systems to create novel cyborgs. As the lines between mind and machine grow more blurry, we will also discuss a number of new questions this raises about what it means to be human and the resulting consequences for everything from medical ethics to our legal system.

Camp Cleanup Event

Join us for our annual trip to Camp Paquatuck in Center Moriches as we help the staff prepare the grounds for the upcoming camp season. Camp Paquatuck is a camp for people with disabilities, so they rely heavily on volunteers. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes that you won't mind getting dirty. Some of the work may involve painting, helping with landscaping, removing old furniture, etc.

AstroFest

Stony Brook Astronomy Club's 9th Annual AstroFestis open to the entire campus as well as the public, and is geared towards people of all backgrounds in astronomy and physics, including no background! There will be explanations of current events in space, exciting demos, to-scale Solar System tours, solar observing to start and nighttime observing to finish. Admission, raffle entry, and refreshments are all completely free, and credit will be given to anyone who participates in enough of the activities.

Knowledge Community: Gendered Expectations in Society

In partnership with LGBTQ* Services and several student organizations, the Center for Civic Justice is hosting its first-ever Knowledge Community. This event is intended to generate dialogue on the ways in which gendered expectations in society affect everyone in unique ways. The dialogue will address how gender identities socialize us, and how socialization can profoundly impact aspects of our lives such as familial expectations, standards of success, and one's safety within society.

SB C-CERT Public Training

As spring is approaching, many severe weather conditions might also follow in the steps of this beautiful season. During this public training, CERT will educate the student body about several types of frequently occurring severe weather conditions in the spring. The public training will also be going over some safety precautions and tips on how to correctly prepare, and respond, to these weather conditions. By the end of this training, CERT hopes that everyone is trained properly and confidently to deal with dangerous weather conditions in the future.

SMASH! For Body Positivity

SMASH! for Body Positivity provides students with resources necessary to overcome common beauty stereotypes; students will "smash" these stereotypes by smashing plates. During this intimate conversation, hosted by the Career Center, McDermott will discuss his working class upbringing. Born and raised in Amityville on Long Island, at the age of 16 he bought the Amityville Country Delicatessen for $7,000. The business helped pay for his undergraduate education at Dowling College. After that McDermott earned his MBA at Northwestern University and then completed the Executive Development Program at Wharton School of Business.

In 2002 McDermott became CEO of SAP America and in 2010 he became co-CEO of SAP AG. In 2014 McDermott was the first American to become CEO of the company, now known as SAP SE. Since 2010 SAP’s market cap has increased from $39 billion to $144.7 billion.

OMG It's Melting - Josh Willis, Ph.D.

Dr. Josh Willis, Project Scientist - Jason-3 for NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, will discuss early results from Oceans Melting Greenland (OMG), and the use of comedy to communicate about climate change. Dr. Willis is the lead NASA scientist for the Jason missions, which measure sea level rise from space.

HepB affects 1 in 10 Asians and Pacific Islanders across the U.S. and worldwide, with an estimated 25% of annual deaths. Valentine's Day Card Event

Help brighten the Valentine's Day of children at Stony Brook University Hospital's Pediatric Oncology unit by making cards for them. Materials will be provided. 30 students at a time can be in the room making the cards, so you may need to wait a bit if the room is at capacity, but students do not need to stay for the entire two hours to receive credit.
