If you want to register for one year mandatory National Youth Service Corps programme, just follow the following procedures:

  1. Visit NYSC portal nysc.gov.ng
  2. Ensure that you have an active Nigerian mobile phone number and a functional e-mail address. You will need the two for your registration. To ensure that your email address is functioning, it is advisable to log in to the email address first so as to ensure that you have not forgotten your password. If you don’t have a functional email address, you will need to quickly create one before you can register. You will need the email address and password to log in to the NYSC portal thereafter.
  3. If you are a locally trained prospective Corps member, that is, you studied here in Nigeria, you are to use your correct matriculation number for the registration.
  4. If you are a locally trained prospective Corps member, you will have access to register on the NYSC, only if your name appears in the Senate or Academic Board Approved lists submitted by the Institution where you graduated.
  5. If you are a foreign-trained graduate or you acquired your qualifications online, you should ensure that your Institution is accredited. You will need to approach the Federal Ministry of Education for evaluation. You will need to upload the letter of evaluation during registration.

    • West African School Certificate (WASC) (with not less than 5 Credits at 2 sittings) or its equivalent; or General Certificate of Education (GCE O’ Level) (with not less than 5 Credits at 2 sittings) or its equivalent; or NECO (with not less than 5 Credits at 2 sittings) or its equivalent; or High School Diploma or its equivalent.

They need the call-up letter for them to be allowed into the Orientation camps in their States of deployment. Also, they need to come to the camp with the original documents which they uploaded for verification.

    • Ensure the picture fills the frame and centralized
    • Ensure the Photo background is white or off-white with no shadow.
  12. Prospective Corps members must not register by proxy. Verification of biometric will be carried out at the orientation camp. Therefore, it is important that you remember the fingers you used during biometric capturing. You will not be registered at the orientation camp if your biometric cannot be verified.
  13. If you want your call-up number sent to you through SMS and you wish to print your call-up letter online, you will need to pay the sum of N2,786.24 (Please note that this rate may change in the future. Therefore, you are to confirm the prevailing rate before making payment)
  14. The Corps members that are not willing to pay the N2,786.24 may need to go to their schools to get their call-up numbers and call-up letters.
  15. If you paid for the online registration before on the NYSC portal but you were not mobilized, you don’t need to pay again.
  16. If you are a married female prospective corps member (whether locally or foreign-trained), you need to upload copies of your Marriage Certificate, evidence of change of name, and your husband’s place of residence during registration.
  17. If you are a pregnant or nursing mother, the orientation camp is highly not ideal for you. If you are in this category, you should note that you will not be accommodated.
  18. If you have challenges related to mobilization, you can call the telephone number that is close to the geo-political zone where the institution you graduated from is located. The contact telephone numbers for the six geo-political zones are as follows:

You may need to visit the NYSC portal to confirm the ruling rate).
  2. If you are a foreign-trained prospective Corps member, you will need to use a Nigerian mobile phone number to register online.
  3. Ensure you complete your online registration on time, Once the NYSC portal is closed, further registration will not be allowed.

NYSC Activities

Four Categories of NYSC Activities

The National Youth Service Corps has four cardinal divisions which are a prerequisite for every Corps Member to participate before he/she is issued the National Service Certificate. The Service year is segmented into:

  1. Orientation Course
  2. Primary Assignment
  3. Community Development Service
  4. Winding- Up/Passing-Out

Orientation Course

The National Youth Service Corps begins with 3 weeks of Orientation Course and it is mandatory for all Nigeria Graduates that have been mobilized for the service. This orientation course usually takes place in the orientation camp. Every state in Nigeria has a National Youth Service Corps Orientation Camp and the orientation course is expected to achieve the following objectives:

  • To give Corps Members enlightenment about the objectives of NYSC and to enable them to be more acquitted with the concept of the scheme.
  • To educate Corps Members about the political, socio-economic, and cultural setting of the environment.
  • To inculcate skills or dexterity in Corps members through the scheme
  • To awaken the spirit of national consciousness in Corps members and help them to be patriotic Nigerians. The NYSC scheme will achieve this by bridging the gap between tribal and regional sentiments among Corps Members
  • To make Corps Members discipline
  • To groom them in the aspect of leadership and social skills that will help them counteract any challenge they encounter
  • To boost the physical and mental attributes of Corps members
  • To instill the spirit of collective responsibility
  • To promote the spirit of unity in diversity by bringing together Corps Members that belong to different tribes, regions, and states in the

To make these objectives a realityinthe orientation course starts with the swearing- or opening ceremony which is presided by the executive Governor of the State/FCT Minister. The Chief Judge of the State/ FCT administers the Oath of Allegiance and the National Pledge.

The activities of the orientation course are as follows: Lectures on the custom and traditionsof the host state, physical training, drills, professional lectures about the Health and wellness of Corps Members, lawyers, teachers, and skill acquisition training. E.t.c. These activities help Corps members to interact with one another and acquire marketable skills.

They also participate in fun activities like drama competitions, dance, Miss NYSC,and Mr. Macho which makes the orientation course very entertaining.

They also participate in inter platoon contestslike cooking, football, volleyball, table tennis, and sanitation. These activities bring about a lot of excitement in the orientation camp.

Corps Members also participate in inter platoon drills and tug of war which is preceded by the Man ‘O’ War training sessions.

Primary Assignment

At the end of the orientation course, Corps Members are posted to various places of primary assignment. The NYSC usesthe area of specialization of Corps Members to post them to different places. Corps members that are posted to rural areas are usually posted to sectors like Agriculture, Health, Infrastructure, and Education. Corps Members in urban areas can be posted to the following sector: Health, Finance, Telecommunication, Oil and Gas,and Media.

Corps Members are expected to accept any place they are posted to in good faith and to work hard to initiate a tremendous change in their host communities.

Community Development Service

It is mostly called CDS by Corps Members. This segment is aimed at awakening the dexterity, innovation, and creativity of Corps Members. Corp Members are expected to detect the challenges facing their host communities and empower their host communities to initiate a project that will be a solution to this challenge,

Corps Members have used this program to educate and sensitize host communities on HIV, polio, and sexual abuse of children. They also sensitize host communities on prevalent issues like the Adult Literacy campaigns, road safety campaignse.t.c.

Corps Members with the support of other people were able to carry out projects like the building of health- care centers, construction of boreholes, classroom blocks, market stalls, and construction of bridges.

Corps Members are active participantsin Millennium Development Goals (MDG) through the War against Poverty (WAP) of the scheme.

Winding –Up/ Passing-Out

The service year usually ends after 12 months and Corps Members are to report to their respective zones for assessment of the service year by the Local Government Inspector. The Local Government Instructor usually briefs the Corps Members after which the Corps Members submit their final clearance letter from their employer to the Zonal/Local Government Inspectors.

Corps Members rehearse for the final parade which will take place at the passing-out ceremony which is formally presided by the Executive Governor of the State. At the event of the passing-out ceremony; Corps Members with stupendous performance during the service year are given accolades such as State Honours Awards. For a Corps member to qualify for this award, He/she must be excellent in the orientation course, place of primary assignment, and winding-up exercise.

Final Note

Ensure that you make most of your one-year mandatory national youth service. You can make the year count as a one-year experience. This can give you an edge when searching for a job. Meanwhile, you don’t need to wait till after the pass-out parade before you start preparing for the labor market. You can start practising these common interview questions.
